At 4:50 on July 3, with the smooth completion of the heavy machinery tamping construction in the section between Gaoxing Station and Sanhuiba Station of the Xiangyang-Chongqing Railway, it marked the successful completion of the first-phase overhaul and concentrated maintenance of the eastern section of Chengdu-Chongqing Railway and Xiangyang-Chongqing Railway in 2025. This project involved over 1,500 personnel and lasted more than two months.
As two vital railway trunk lines in western China, the Chengdu-Chongqing Railway and Xiangyang-Chongqing Railway serve as key links for the Chengdu-Chongqing dual-city economic circle, the China-Europe Railway Express, and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. They play a significant role in boosting regional economic development and facilitating rural revitalization. However, with increasingly heavy transportation tasks, these two "old lines" have seen varying degrees of decline in line equipment quality, making a comprehensive centralized renovation of line equipment an urgent need.
To eliminate potential risks on the lines, consolidate the equipment foundation, and ensure transportation safety, since May, the Chongqing Engineering Section, with support and cooperation from the Fuling Engineering Section, Liupanshui Engineering & Electricity Section, Chengdu Engineering Heavy Machinery Section, Chengdu Engineering Overhaul Section, and other stations and sections, has successfully completed the scheduled tasks of 34 construction and professional maintenance projects.
It is reported that during this overhaul and concentrated maintenance of the eastern section of Chengdu-Chongqing Railway and Xiangyang-Chongqing Railway, a total of 38.957 km of rail replacement in overhaul, 1.292 km of subgrade defect treatment, 10 sets of turnout foundation defect treatment, 2 items of bridge safety inspection facilities overhaul (covering 3 bridges with a total length of 858 meters), 97.095 km of heavy machinery tamping on lines, 59 sets of heavy machinery tamping on turnouts, 9 sets of grouped replacement of turnout steel components, 93.2 km of heavy machinery grinding on lines, 45.153 km of gauge fine adjustment, replacement of 54 old and damaged rails, treatment of 158 cases of mud pumping and whitening, and grinding of 1,415 welds were completed. These efforts have comprehensively improved the quality of line equipment.
Faced with challenges such as long duration, heavy tasks, numerous projects, and a large number of personnel in the concentrated maintenance, the section started from the three aspects of "ensuring safety, quality, and progress." It conducted in-depth on-site research, scientifically planned the construction organization, clarified the division of responsibilities of the "one department and three groups," formulated key safety risk control measures, strengthened process management and standard implementation, actively introduced and applied new technologies and techniques, broke professional barriers, and established a comprehensive professional team to ensure the safe and orderly progress of all operations. Meanwhile, the Party Committee of the section took the lead in establishing the functional joint Party branch in the Beibei area, integrating Party building into the frontline of production, setting an example, making dedicated efforts in critical tasks, and giving full play to the leading role of Party organizations and the vanguard and exemplary role of Party members.
"During this rail replacement in the overhaul, we fully adopted the trolley welding mode to avoid an increase in the number of welds caused by inserting short rails, realizing the normalization of the 'rail replacement + flash welding' mode, which significantly improved welding efficiency and line quality. Additionally, we innovatively used floor-sweeping robots to assist in heavy machinery tamping operations, greatly enhancing work quality and production efficiency," said Wang Lu, Chief of the Line Technology Section.
The successful completion of this overhaul and concentrated maintenance of the eastern section of Chengdu-Chongqing Railway and Xiangyang-Chongqing Railway has significantly improved equipment quality and transportation efficiency, laying a solid safety foundation for the smooth cargo gathering and operation of the China-Europe Railway Express and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor.
